If a child tells you about abuse…

Quietly encourage the child to tell you about the abuse. Do not press the child for more information than he or she wants to give.

Try not to overreact. The child needs your support, not to feel like he made you mad or sad by telling you what happened.

Let the child know it was not her fault that she was abused and that she is not in trouble. Tell the child how glad you are that she had the courage to tell.

Thank the child for sharing the information and tell him that you will help. Then call the Child Abuse Hotline or law enforcement.
